Four years ago, Michael Martinez, a Filipino skater first captured the heart of Filipinos when he became the lone representative of the Philippines in Sochi Olympics. Overall, he finished 19th at the time.
The Filipino skater finished in 8th place last year in the Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany in which he missed the Olympic qualifying cut because only the Top 7 would make it to South Korea for the Winter Games. However, being the 8th placer means he would be the first alternate should a skater withdraw from the Games.
Recently, Martinez got a message from the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) which says “Michael, you’re in”. By that message, Martinez was pretty shocked. He said “I rushed to the rink and told my coach. We’re all super happy about it. I’m very, very thankful for everybody, for all the players.”
The Winter Olympics opens on February 9, 2018. Martinez will be joined by Asa Miller, who will represent the Philippines in the slalom ski event.
