Though, Sen. Grace Poe has not decided to run being a President or Vice-President of the Philippines yet, she’s now facing a lot of controversy regarding her residency in the Philippines.
The life of Mary Grace Sonora Poe-Llamanzares is an open book for everyone. Keeping herself private is hard when having very well-known parents. Her life story was dramatized in ABS-CBN’s “Maala-ala Mo Kaya”. It shows how the couple adopted Grace Poe when she was just a baby.
A woman named Tessie took care of Grace. She suggested the couple to adopt the baby when she migrated to the US. Her parents told her the truth when she turned 16 but she already knows about the adoption thing when she was in grade school.
Grace continued her studies in Boston College in US and came back to the Philippines to support her Father’s Presidential candidacy. Unfortunately, Fernando Poe did not win in 2002 Election and had slipped into coma. Not regaining consciousness, Fernando Poe died.
People saw that Poe will continue her parents’ legacy in helping Filipino people. She ran and won a senatorial seat last election. Now, that President Aquino’s presidency has come to an end. Everybody is busy picking their President and Vice-President candidates.
Vice-President Jejomar Binay offered Sen. Grace Poe to be his running mate, but the latter declined the offer. Binay’s camp found out that Poe is eligible to run either of the positions.
Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco, the interim president of Binay’s United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) said in Inquirer that she is not qualified to run for President or Vice President next year.
According to Article 7, Section 2 of the Constitution the candidate for the mentioned positions must be a Filipino resident for a minimum of 10 years prior to the elections.
Tiangco showed a copy of Grace Poe’s certificate of candidacy for the previous mid-term elections. That as of May 13, 2013, she has resided in the Philippines for 6 years and 6 months. Her period of residency is not enough to meet the requirements if ever she decides to run for higher position because she would have been a resident in the Philippines for only 9 years and 6 months.
Tiangco said that she was never offered. Vice President Binay was just being polite, reported in Rappler.
On the other hand, the lady Senator said she is qualified to run for President in 2016, reported by GMA network. She states that she is very much qualified but has not yet decided to run for candidacy. Grace Poe residency in the Philippines is more than 10 years required by the Constitution.
She was insulted towards the allegation for not being honest on her residency. Answering the questions on her citizenship she quoted: “Ako hindi Pilipino? Eh yung height ko nga, yung ilong ko Pilipinong-Pilipino.”
