At the peak of the trending #Hugot lines posted by almost everyone, teenager or not, in facebook, instagram, twitter and other social networking sites, a young Filipino poet just defeated any other hugot lines by putting his emotions in a nutshell of a poem, most likely presented as a soliloquy of an unfortunate love. And guess what? The young man’s video while presenting his heart-breaking sentiments just hit over 54,000 shares!
Entitled “Ang Huling Tula na Isusulat Ko para sa ‘Yo”, the poem conveys the melancholy of a lover telling his beloved his need not to be treasured but to be loved. The line “… hindi ako antigong salamin na matagal mo nag pag-aari, na tinitingnan mo lang para ipaalala sa sarili mo na maganda ka.” is just one of the metaphors, that gained the audience’s applause in agreement. “Ang kailangan ko ay mahalin mo ako gaya nga unan mo sa gabi, … binubulongan ng mga pinakatatago mong panaginip,” is another line expressing his anguish.
Reminiscing sweet moments of the poem’s persona with his love started the lines of the poem, and ending up with the line, “… ito na ang huling tula na isinulat ko para sa’yo.”, with the lines “…ayaw kong maging mahalaga. Ang kailangan ko ay mahalin,” repeated and emphasized several times.
Juan Miguel Severo, the one who wrote “Ang Huling Tula na Isusulat Ko para sa ‘Yo”, is a member of a local spoken poetry group – “Words Anonymous”. This group gives life to poetry which seems to be dying in this modern time. Poetry, as the members of the said group claims, is not limited in papers, but may also exist in any way possible. Through open mic sessions, members are given the chance not just to write poems but to perform them as well. The art of spoken word is a very refreshing way of rejuvenating the spirit of poetry.
